Temple Fencers Head to Columbus for NCAA Championships Thursday and Friday
3.18.14 | Women's Fencing
PHILADELPHIA - On Thursday and Friday, March 20-21, four members of the #9 Temple fencing team will head to Columbus, Ohio, for the NCAA Championships. ESPN3 will have live coverage of the event at 1:00 p.m. on Friday HERE, and live results will be available through the NCAA Fencing site HERE.
Seventy-two total fencers will compete on the women's side, while another 72 represent men's fencing teams at the meet.
The Owls are sending three repeat qualifiers and one first-timer, with the four representing each class and each weapon. Senior Chantal Montrose (epee) will be competing at the NCAA Championships for a second time after also representing Temple in her freshman year. Junior Tiki Kastor (sabre) will compete for a second straight year, as will sophomore Fatima Largaespada (foil). Freshman Rachael Clark (epee) rounds out the group and will be competing in her first nationals.
"This is what we work for all year, and it's a great way for these young ladies to finish the season," said Temple head coach Nikki Franke. "They've been training hard, and the entire team has helped them get ready. They're prepared, and they have to understand that, accept that, and be confident. They need to enjoy the moment because there's no guarantee of ever getting back to the NCAA Championships again.
"I want them to perform well and do their best. It's a very grueling and emotionally draining two days of strong bouts, one after the other. They have to be mentally tough and work through it. They're excited about qualifying and going. Hopefully they will perform as well as they have all season. They just have to stay in their game and do what they do well."
Montrose, Clark and Kastor were all selected following strong performances on Saturday at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional where they reached the finals. Montrose and Clark finished fifth and sixth in epee, respectively, while Kastor placed eighth in sabre. As a freshman, Montrose placed 20th at the national meet.
Kastor was the team's top performer at the NCAA Championships in 2013, tying for 11th place in sabre and finishing 14th overall.
Largaespada received an at-large bid due to her finish at regionals (11th) as well as her performance throughout the season and her individual ranking. She placed 20th in foil last year as a freshman at the NCAA Championships.
Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After the round-robin, the top-four finishers will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with the winners fencing to determine first and second places, and the losers being awarded a tie for third place.
An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes for the duration of the championships.
