PHILADELPHIA - The first-ever American Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship is set for this weekend, and Temple's men's and women's teams will have their top athletes represented against some of the top competition in the country. The meet will take place Friday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, March 1 at the 168th St Armory in New York. Live video and live results will be available for the entire meet, and can be accessed through the above links.
On the men's side, three American teams are currently ranked in the top 80 by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Louisville is 53rd, Connecticut is 68th and USF is 79th. On the women's side, Houston is ranked 87th and Connecticut is 93rd. In last year's NCAA Outdoor Championships, the women's team from UCF placed fifth.
In the USFTCCCA regional rankings, both the men's and women's teams from Rutgers, Connecticut, Cincinnati, Houston and Louisville are ranked in the top 15 in their respective regions. Memphis and UCF are both regionally-ranked on the women's side, making seven of the 10 women's teams among the best in their region.Â
"My expectation is that we go into this meet and all those competing for us give 100 percent," said Temple head coach Eric Mobley. "That everyone does their best and doesn't worry about what position they're in on the list coming into the meet. I want everyone to compete at their highest level and they need to be mentally prepared to put their best effort forward."
The Owls do have some athletes with top 10 conference marks heading into the meet, particularly in distance events. On the men's side, senior Will Kellar's mile time of 4:11.31 is the fifth-best in The American this season, and junior Matt Kacyon's 3000m time of 8:27.09 is the third-best in the conference. Kellar has the sixth-best time in that event, 8:29.80. Kacyon has the sixth-fastest time in the 5000m, 14:51.56 (adjusted for track length).
For the women, junior Jenna Dubrow has the fifth-fastest time in the 5000m of 17:18.15 (adjusted for track length), while senior Anna Pavone has the eighth-fastest time in that event, 17:23.16 (also adjusted). Freshman Jimmia McCluskey has the seventh-best mark in the long jump (5.83m), and sophomore Jamila Janneh has the 10th-best mark in the triple jump (12.00m). Junior Margo Britton recorded the seventh-best mark in the shot put (14.63m) and the 12th-best in the weight throw (17.73m).
Despite the strong marks by some heading into the weekend, Mobley is adamant his athletes must ignore the lists and just go in and give it everything they have. Temple has not faced competition this strong, and he hopes it will leave an impression.
"This will be the toughest team competition that any of our athletes have faced," said Mobley. "We'll be going up against national level and elite athletes. It will be very eye-opening, and I'm hoping the experience will benefit us in the future."
