MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Temple redshirt junior Jimmy McDonnell has been the named the American Athletic Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year. The award was one of eight individual honors announced at the league's Awards luncheon Wednesday at the Gibson Guitar Factory.
McDonnell will receive a $2,000 scholarship, which may be applied to graduate or professional studies. The selection was made by the Conference's Academic Affairs Committee.
"Jimmy represents the true meaning of the term student-athlete," said Temple head coach Fran Dunphy. "He works as hard in the classroom as he does on the court. I am very happy for him and his family."
A native of Jackson, N.J. (Jackson Memorial), McDonnell has earned a 3.63 cumulative grade point average as a civil engineering major. On track to graduate in May, he plans to pursue a master's in either civil engineering or engineering management.
On the court, the 6-10 forward has had his most productive year as an Owl. He has played in 23 games, making six starts while setting career highs in points (10 vs. USF, Jan. 9) and rebounds (6 at Louisville, Feb. 27).
Part of three NCAA Tournament teams for the Owls, McDonnell also excells when it comes to community service. He has taken part in the team's annual Hope Lodge Community Outreach program, and participated in the Special Olympic Stair Climb as well as Temple's Big Brother/Big Sister trip to Eastern State Penitentiary.
The American Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is one of a number of scholarships presented by the conference during the 2013-14 academic year. One male and one female from each of the conference's 10 member institutions may be named as the winners of the conference's Institutional Scholar-Athlete Scholarships. The conference also names male and female Basketball Scholar-Athletes of the Year and a Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The winners of the institutional, basketball and football awards are then eligible for the American Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, which provides an additional postgraduate scholarship to one male and one female student-athlete.
