MEMPHIS - It was the second overtime game in eight days between Temple and UCF, but this time it was the Knights (13-17) who came out ahead, beating the Owls 94-90 in double overtime in the first round of the American Athletic Conference Championships. Ninth-seeded UCF's Isaiah Sykes scored a career-high 36 points to lead his team past eighth-seeded Temple and into the quarterfinals against top-seeded Cincinnati.
The Owls, who finish their season at 9-22, got a career performance from sophomore Quenton DeCosey with 28 points. He hit 6-of-8 from behind the arc, with the last of those giving the Owls hope with six seconds remaining in the second overtime period.
Three others also reached double figures in scoring for Temple, including junior Will Cummings with 25 points and a career-high nine assists. Junior Anthony Lee scored 17 points, and in the final game of his collegiate career, senior Dalton Pepper put up 14 points.
Pepper hit two 3-pointers in the game to complete an impressive season streak. He made at least one shot from long range in all 31 games this season, becoming the first player in program history to make a three-pointer in each game of a season.
It was a game that saw nine ties and 17 lead changes, with neither team leading by more than five points for the nearly the last 25 minutes of action. The Owls nearly lost in heartbreaking fashion at the end of regulation, but a long three-pointer by Sykes was ruled to have left his hands after the final buzzer.
Cummings gave Temple a two-point lead 10 seconds into the second overtime, but the Owls did not score again until 48 seconds remained. By then, the Knights had built a five-point lead, and Temple's efforts came too late.
UCF hit three-pointers at a torrid pace early in the game, draining four of its first five attempts from long range en route to a 20-13 lead on the Owls after seven minutes of action. Temple was hitting from the field as well, and when the treys started to fall, the Owls caught up quickly.
Nine of the Owls' first 14 field goal attempts hit the mark, and an 8-2 run put Temple within a point, 22-21 at 10:46. Cummings scored nine of the team's 11 points over a three-minute stretch.
Down by six points near the eight-minute mark, Pepper's first trey of the game started an 8-0 run for the Owls that gave them their first lead since the opening minute.
DeCosey, who hit 3-of-4 from long range in the first half, made the third of those with two minutes left for a 38-34 lead. Cummings was on the positive end of a goaltending call with just seconds remaining in the half for another four-point Temple advantage, but Sykes drained a long three at the buzzer to pull UCF within one, 40-39 at the break. He finished the half with 14 points to lead all players, while Cummings and DeCosey both had 11 for the Owls.
The Knights used a 10-2 run early in the second half for a six-point, 51-45 lead in the first five minutes. The Owls got their offense back for an 8-2 run to tie the score at 55-55, and the game remained close the rest of the way with no separation of more than five points.
The lead changed hands a number of times until 3:44 remained and Lee put Temple ahead 70-68 after converting an old-fashioned three-point play. DeCosey later extended the Owls' lead to five, 75-70 with his fifth trey of the game, but Sykes answered with a three and then a jumper to quickly tie the game with 2:04 left. Lee and Sykes each hit one-of-two at the line in the final two minutes, but neither team hit a field goal as the score remained tied 76-76 at the end of regulation.
Temple trailed by three in the first overtime before a Cummings dunk at 3:21, but much like what would be their fate in the second overtime, the Owls did not score again until 45 seconds remained. Two free throws from Pepper put Temple within two, 82-80, and a Cummings steal off a UCF turnover led to a fast break layup to tie the game for a ninth time with 19 seconds left. UCF once again put the ball in Skyes' hands, but his three-point attempt missed the mark to send the game to another overtime.
