Five Unanswered Runs Lead Baseball to 5-4 Win Over Hartford

3.15.14 | Baseball

BEAR, Del. – Temple baseball (4-8) scored five unanswered runs to defeat Hartford (4-7) at Caravel Academy 5-4 on Saturday afternoon.  Starting pitcher Matt Hockenberry went eight and two-thirds innings to pick up the win for the Owls.

Hartford scored one run in the first inning and three in the third to get a 4-0 lead over Temple.

Temple scored its first two runs in the fourth inning.  With one out, Rob Amaro got on base when he was hit by a pitch.  Amaro advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Jimmy Kerrigan then doubled to left field that put Amaro on third.  Andrew Nist hit a sacrifice fly to right field that knocked in Amaro.  Frank D'Agostino singled to left field that scored Kerrigan from second.

The Owls added another run the next inning.  Josh Mason walked to start the inning.  Reyn Sugai singled to third base to put runners on first and second.  Daniel Dragos laid down a bunt to advance the runners one base each, and Derek Peterson then hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to knock in Mason.

Temple got the lead in the sixth inning.  With one out, Nist singled up the middle.  D'Agostino doubled down the right field line to move Nist to third.  Josh Mason singled to left field with two outs to score Nist to tie the game.  Reyn Sugai doubled to centerfield to bat in D'Agostino for the game-winning run.

Hockenberry gave up zero hits after the fourth inning until two outs in the ninth inning.  Zach Batchelor came in for Hockenberry and got the final out with his first pitch.  Hockenberry finished the game with five hits and four runs (zero earned) along with one walk and six strikeouts.  Batchelor maintained his perfect ERA of 0.00 on the season with the final out of the game.

Sugai finished the game two for two with a RBI and walk, while D'Agostino was three for four and one RBI.

Temple will take on Saint Peter's tomorrow for a doubleheader again at Caravel Academy.  The first game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m., and the second game will only be seven innings instead of nine.
