Baseball splits doubleheader against Saint Peter's

3.16.14 | Baseball

BEAR, Del. – Temple baseball (5-9) split a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Caravel Academy to Saint Peter's (3-12), winning game one 2-1 and losing game two 5-3.  Temple was 2-1 overall this weekend with a win yesterday against Hartford.

The Owls scored first in game one in the bottom of the first inning.  Reyn Sugai walked to lead off the inning.  With one out, Derek Peterson walked.  Rob Amaro singled to right field to knock in Sugai from second to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.

Saint Peter's tied the game in the third inning with a sacrifice fly off starter Preston Hill.

Hill then held Saint Peter's hitless over the next three innings before Patrick Vanderslice came in the seventh to relieve him.  Hill finished the game with five hits, one walk and one run while striking out six batters.

Vanderslice and Tim McCarthy combined to allow only Saint Peter's to one hit for the next three innings of the game.  Vanderslice went two innings with one strikeout, and McCarthy came in the ninth for the win while retiring the side with one strikeout.

Temple went scoreless for seven innings after their first run before getting the game-winning run in the ninth.  With the top of the lineup to start the inning, Sugai singled to right center.  Daniel Dragos singled through the left side.  With Sugai on second, Peterson laid down a bunt that the pitcher fielded and threw to third.  The throw went past the third basemen, and Sugai ran in to win the game for Temple.

Both teams scored runs in the first inning of game two, which was only seven innings.  Sugai walked, and Dragos was hit by a pitch to put men on first and second.  Peterson moved Sugai to third with a groundball to shortstop that got Dragos out at second.  Rob Amaro then hit a ball deep enough to centerfield for a sacrifice fly that scored Sugai.

The lead was taken by Temple in the third.  With one out, Peterson doubled to left field and went to third on a passed ball.  Amaro was hit by a pitch, and Jimmy Kerrigan singled to center field to knock in Peterson.

Saint Peter's got their first lead of the day with four runs in the fourth inning.  The Peacocks scored all four runs off Simon Mathews before Zach White came in for relief.

The Owls cut the deficit down to two with a run in the fifth.  Dragos singled to right and advanced to second on a wild pitch with one out.  He scored when Amaro hit a groundball to the shortstop, and the shortstop's throw went past the first baseman to give Dragos enough time to score standing up.

Temple had one final chance in the seventh inning.  David Hall singled to right field for a pinch hit at-bat.  Sugai singled through the right side of the infield to move Hall to second.  Sugai and Hall both advanced one base on a grounder to the pitcher by Dragos.  Peterson grounded out at third, and Hall was thrown out at home on the play.  Amaro then flied out to centerfield to end the game.

Temple is scheduled to play their first home game of the season on Tuesday against Lehigh at 3:00 p.m.  They will travel to Fairfax, Virginia to take on George Mason on Wednesday.
