ORLANDO, Fla. – Temple baseball (7-11, 2-2) fell to UCF (15-12, 4-0) 6-4 in game one of a conference weekend series Friday night at UCF Baseball Complex.
UCF scored two runs off starter Matt Hockenberry in the sixth inning to grab a 6-3 lead that Temple could not overcome. Hockenberry went for six innings, allowing six earned runs, eight hits and three walks while striking out five to pick up his first loss of the season.
Temple scored the first run of the game in the third inning. Jimmy Kerrigan walked with one out and advanced to second on a throwing error off a failed pickoff attempt. Derek Peterson then walked to put runners on first and second. UCF's pitcher Eric Skoglund then successfully picked off Kerrigan that had Peterson advance to second. After Robert Amaro walked, Michael D'Acunti singled to left field to knock in Peterson.
UCF then scored its own run in the third inning and added three more in the fourth to take a lead they would hold for the rest of the game.
Temple scored two runs in the fifth to cut the lead to one. With two outs, Peterson doubled down the right field line. Amaro singled to left field to
allow Peterson to score. Michael D'Acunti hit a single up the middle to move Amaro to second. Andrew Nist then knocked in Amaro with a single to right center.
Temple had one final chance in the ninth inning. Derek Peterson hit his first homerun of the season to lead off the ninth. The Owls were only able to get one runner on base after the homerun as Zach Rodgers got the save for UCF.
Game two of the weekend series is scheduled to start tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. with senior Preston Hill scheduled to start.
