Softball Wins Two on Opening Day of Play at Rebel Spring Games

3.4.14 | Softball

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Temple softball team improved to 4-8 overall with two victories on its opening day of play at the Rebel Spring Games on Tuesday, March 4. The Owls defeated Saint Francis (Pa.), 7-4, before picking up a victory over Niagara by the same score, 7-4.

Against the Red Flash, TU put up four runs in the top of the second. Freshman Kaylyn Zierke collected an RBI single in the frame, while senior Sarah Prezioso belted a three-run shot to cap the scoring. The Owls got another run in the third when sophomore Kelsey Dominik scored on a Saint Francis error. Dominik had reached on a single earlier in the inning.

The Red Flash scored twice in the bottom of the third, but sophomore Leah Lucas got those back with one swing of the bat in the fourth. With two runners on, Lucas sent a single down the left field line, driving in both baserunners. SFU scored twice more in the bottom of the fifth, but it was too little, too late, and the Owls held on for the 7-4 victory.

Junior Jessica Mahoney (1-2) earned the win for TU, pitching 5.2 innings with two walks and four strikeouts, allowing six hits and four runs, only two earned. Freshman Amanda Gatt picked up her first career save, giving up one hit in 1.1 innings of work. Alexis Bower (2-1) took the loss, lasting just 3.2 innings and giving up five hits, seven runs, walking three and fanning two.

It was more of the same in the game against the Purple Eagles, with Temple scoring in bunches early. The Owls scored three times in both the first and second innings to build a 6-0 lead. The first two runs of the game came on Dominik's two-run, two-out homer, scoring junior Lacey McKeon who had singled earlier. Lucas finished the scoring when she took advantage of a miscue by the right fielder, coming all the way around from first.

Prezioso tripled with one out in the second before McKeon drove her in with an infield single to get the scoring going for that frame. Senior Stephanie Pasquale followed McKeon's single with an RBI double, and Lucas collected another RBI with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Niagara got on the board in the fifth with one run, and scored one more in the sixth and two in the seventh to make it interesting. The Purple Eagles had the tying run on deck before Dominik got out of the inning, and picked up the win, with a ground out to second.

Dominik (2-3) went the distance, scattering eight hits, giving up four hits and one walk while striking out a career-high nine batters. Bridget Hogan (1-2) took the loss, allowing eight hits and seven runs in 6.0 innings of work. She walked just one and struck out six.

Temple (4-8) is back in action on Wednesday, March 5, with a 10 a.m. game against Sacred Heart.
