Baseball Loses Doubleheader to Radford

3.5.14 | Baseball

RADFORD, Va. – Temple baseball dropped both games of a doubleheader to Radford, losing game one 6-3 and game two 3-1.

Radford scored the first run in the bottom of the first inning off of starter Phil Gianakos.  Gianakos went two innings, allowing two hits and one run with one strikeout as the starting pitcher as Temple used five pitchers for the seven inning game.

Temple tied the game up in the fourth inning.  With two outs, Michael D'Acunti was hit by a pitch and then stole second.  Jimmy Kerrigan singled up the middle to score D'Acunti.

The Highlanders took the lead with three runs the next inning off of Patrick Vanderslice.  Vanderslice allowed a single to start the inning and had the bases loaded with one out when Ryan Kuehn replaced him.   Kuehn gave up a double that scored two runs.  He grounded out the next batter which knocked in another run before lining out the next batter to end the inning.

The Owls cut the lead to one with two runs in the sixth.  With one out, Derek Peterson singled up the middle.  Rob Amaro then hit a homer to left field to score the two runs.

Radford added two insurance runs during their at-bats in the sixth inning off Kuehn.  Radford's closer then retired the side in the seventh to end the game.

Zach White got the start in the second game, and allowed three runs to start the game.  The Owls cut the lead to two the next inning.  Kerrigan singled through the right side to start the inning.  Nick West then singled with one out.  With two outs, Reyn Sugai singled through the right side and scored Kerrigan from second base.

Both teams were held scoreless the rest of the game as Temple managed three hits the rest of the game while Radford had two.

Peterson doubled to right field in the fifth inning with two outs to get in scoring position, but Amaro struck out swinging to end the inning.  The Owls were then held hitless to end the game.

The Owls will play three opponents this weekend starting on Friday against Niagara at 10:45 a.m.  Temple will then face Villanova on Saturday and Saint Joseph's on Sunday with all three games at Saint Joseph's.
