Zierke Goes 2-for-3 in Softball's 4-0 Loss to Niagara
3.5.14 | Softball
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Freshman Kaylyn Zierke was 2-for-3 at the plate, but her efforts were not enough as the Temple softball team dropped a 4-0 decision to Niagara at the Rebel Spring Games on March 5. The loss snapped a three-game win streak for the Owls.
The Purple Eagles got on the board early, going ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first. Niagara recorded three hits and took advantage of one TU error in the frame. That score would remain until the bottom of the sixth when NU tacked on two more runs for the final score of 4-0.
The Cherry & White weren't without opportunities in the game, stranding seven runners on base. Sydney Smyers (1-0) kept the Owls off-balance, though, scattering four hits over 7.0 innings, walking just two and striking out eight.
Junior Jessica Mahoney (1-3) picked up the loss, giving up seven hits and four runs, walking two and fanning two.
In addition to Zierke, Temple got hits from senior Devynne Nelons (1-for-3) and sophomore Annie Marcopolus (1-for-2).
TU falls to 5-9 overall and will play next on Friday, March 7, beginning with a 12 p.m. game against Sacred Heart.
