PHILADELPHIA – Temple baseball (3-8) dropped its final game of the Big Five Baseball Bash to Saint Joseph's (5-4) 11-3 on Sunday afternoon at Smithson Field. Villanova, Saint Joseph's and Temple will share the title for the tournament with each team going 2-1 in three games this weekend.

Saint Joseph's started the game with two runs off starter Simon Mathews in the first inning. The Hawks added another run off Mathews in the second and third inning to grab an early 4-0 lead. Mathews went two innings in his third start of the season, giving up five hits, four runs (three earned) and two walks. Phil Gianakos came in the second to relieve Mathews and went two innings himself.

Temple cut the lead to two in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Sean Arnott singled to left field. Reyn Sugai moved Arnott to third with a double down the left field line. Daniel Dragos grounded out to the shortstop to score Arnott and move Sugai to third. Sugai then scored on a wild pitch.

The Hawks then scored four runs in their turn at the plate in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach for the Owls. Temple made one last attempt in the ninth with one run. With one out, Derek Peterson walked, and Texas Williams was hit by a pitch the next at-bat. Nick West hit a deep fly ball to right field that advanced Peterson to third and Williams to third. Jimmy Kerrigan then walked to load the bases. Frank D'Agostino then walked to score Peterson before a fly ball ended the game.

Temple will return to action on Tuesday at Rider at 3:00 p.m. The Owls went 1-1 against the Broncs in the first weekend series of the season.
