CORAL GABLES, Fla. - As the Temple women's outdoor track & field team inches closer to the American Athletic Conference Championships, the Owls continue to put up strong marks in competition. At the Hurricane Alumni Invitational hosted by the University of Miami on Saturday, Temple recorded eight top-five finishes.
Distance runners Anna Pavone and Jenna Dubrow competed at a separate meet, the George Mason Spring Invite. They placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in a field of more than 30 runners. Pavone's time was 17:41.02, and Dubrow's was 17:41.66.
Temple's top finish of the day in Miami was earned by junior Margo Britton in the shot put, as she placed second with a throw of 14.80m, her best this outdoor season. Britton took fifth place in the discus with a mark of 46.27m.
Both of the Owls' relay teams ran their fastest times of the 2014 season. In the 4x100 meter relay, the Owls took fifth place in 46.70 with a team comprised of Demeshia Davis, Jimmia McCluskey, Courtney Mitchell and Bionca St. Fleur. The 4x400 meter relay team also took fifth place, with a season-best time of 3:47.57. That group also included Davis, who ran the relay with Hollis Coleman, Kenya Gaston and Michelle Davis Timothy. Both relays bettered ECAC-qualifying marks from earlier meets this season.
Sophomore Jamila Janneh set a personal record in the high jump, taking fifth with a jump of 1.66m. Janneh was also one of three Owls to PR in the 100m dash with a time of 12.49 to place 20th. St. Fleur ran a personal-best time of 12.22 in that event to place 15th, and Mitchell's time of 12.42 earned her 18th and was also a personal best.
Three Temple jumpers placed in the top 10 in the long jump, led by junior Kiersten LaRoche who took third place with a mark of 5.52m. St. Fleur was fifth (5.48) and McCluskey placed 10th (5.22). Janneh was the Owls' lone competitor in the triple jump, and placed fifth with a mark of 11.61m.
Junior Kaitlyn McSurdy was just off her personal best in the 400m hurdles, taking ninth in 1:04.82. Davis Timothy placed 11th in the 400m dash in 14.67, and freshman Simone Brownlee was 12th in the 100m hurdles in 14.67.
Davis was the top finisher among five Owls in the 200m dash, placing 24th in 24.86.
