Baseball Defeated by Villanova 16-8

AMBLER, Pa. – Temple baseball dropped a non-conference game to Villanova 16-8 at Skip Wilson Field on Tuesday afternoon.  Temple falls to 12-20 while Villanova improves to 12-24.

Both teams scored runs in the first inning.  Reyn Sugai walked as the leadoff hitter for Temple and stole second base.  Sugai then advanced to third on a balk.  Derek Peterson hit a grounder to shortstop that allowed Sugai to score.

Villanova added two runs and one more in the third inning to stretch their lead to three.  Temple scored a run in the third and fourth inning to cut the deficit to one.  In the third, Texas Williams singled up the middle and stole second base.  With one out, Michael D'Acunti singled up the middle to allow Williams to score from second base.

Frank D'Agostino doubled to left center field to start the fourth inning for Temple.  D'Agostino advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a grounder to the shortstop from Nick West.

Both teams scored one run in the fifth.  Williams once again led off the inning with a single up the middle.  Williams reached third base on a ground out and a wild pitch.  Williams scored on a grounder to third base hit by Robert Amaro.

Villanova took over the game for good with five runs in the sixth and six in the seventh.  The Wildcats used eight hits, including a grand slam, four walks and two hit by pitches in the two innings to seal up the win.

The Owls added four runs in the eighth inning.  Kerrigan led off with a walk.  With two outs, Josh Mason drew another walk.  Sugai drew a third walk to load the bases.  Williams singled to bring home Mason and Kerrigan.  Derek Peterson tripled to right field to add two more runs.

Simon Mathews started for Temple and lasted five innings.  He allowed eight hits, five runs (four earned) and one walk with three strikeouts.

The Owls travel to Delaware tomorrow for a second straight non-conference game.  The game is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
