Championship Central
PHILADELPHIA - Temple's men's and women's track & field teams will compete May 2-4 at the inaugural American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships in Tampa, Fla, at the USF Track and Field Stadium. The Owls will be sending 15 athletes from each team to the championships, which will have daily live streaming and live results through the link above.
Temple is coming off a strong showing at the 120th Penn Relays, particularly in the field events which saw the Owls earn four medals.
In total for the men's and women's teams, there are nine events in which Temple athletes have one of the best 10 marks in The American so far this season. Leading the women is junior Margo Britton, who is tied for the third-best mark in shot put (15.37m) and has the fifth-best mark in the discus (48.18m). Britton's throw of 15.37m earned her first place at the Penn Relays in the women's college division.
Junior Matt Kacyon has the third-best time in the conference in the 3,000m steeplechase (9:04.33) and the fifth-best time in the 1500m (3:53.28). Fellow distance runner and senior Will Kellar ranks fourth in the 800m with a time of 1:51.10, while junior Alex Izewski ranks fourth in the 10,000m (30:58.77).
Senior Gabe Pickett, who earned medals in both the long jump and triple jump at the Penn Relays, has the fourth-best mark in the conference in the triple jump (15.01m).
On the women's side, sophomore Jamila Janneh has the sixth-best triple jump mark of 12.30m, which is also not only her personal best but the Temple school record.
Senior Anna Pavone comes into the weekend with the 10th-best time in the women's 1500m, 4:37.54.
Numerous other Temple athletes competing this weekend have times or distances which rank them in the top 20 in their respective events.

Men's Outlook
The UConn men will seek to defend the title they claimed at the Indoor Track and Field Championships back on March 1 at the Armory in NYC. In the outdoor season, the Huskies took second place in their Dog Fight Meet against Albany, took two first place titles at the Specs Town Invitational, and had strong performances at the Larry Ellis Invitational and Penn Relays.
Louisville and Houston, the second and third place teams at the indoor championships, will also be major contenders to watch. The Cardinals have set a number of school and meet records in a strong spring campaign, and enter the conference championships fresh off 14 top-five finishes at the UK Relays. The Cougars have also had a strong outdoor season, highlighted by a second place finish against a tough field at the Texas Invitational, and feature an extremely strong crew of sprinters that dominate the conference leaderboards in those events.
Women's Outlook
On the women's side, SMU brings the Indoor title with them into this weekend's championships. The Mustang field athletes will be a key to SMU's title defense. SMU captured female field athlete of the week awards three times in the first four weeks of the season, with Lucija Cvitanovic, and Helena Perez (twice) capturing the honors. Entering the Championship, a Mustang holds the best mark in the conference in five different field events.
UConn fell just short of the top spot during the Indoor Championship, and will push for this season's outdoor title. After a runner up at last season's Big East Outdoor Championships, the Huskies will look towards Celina Emerson (conference's fastest in the 400-meter at 53.09) and Brigette Mania (conference best 4:21.04 in the 1500-meter) to propel them towards the title.
USF is also a contender led by the strength of its student athletes in the jumping events. Triple jumper Marqueshia Stallworth has the best mark in the conference at 12.80m, while Courtney Anderson (high jump best of 1.78m), Natasha Stewart (long jump best of 6.32m) both sit just behind the conference leaders.
