Baseball Knocks Off No. 5 Louisville 4-2 Behind Vanderslice's First Collegiate Win

5.10.14 | Baseball

CAMDEN, N.J. – Temple baseball knocked off No. 5 Louisville 4-2 behind pitcher Patrick Vanderslice's first career win on Saturday afternoon at Campbell's Field.  The Owls improve to 13-28, 8-12 while Louisville drops to 39-12, 15-5.

The Owls scored three unanswered runs in the fourth inning to take a lead they would never relinquish.  Derek Peterson led off the inning with a double to right center, and Michael D'Acunti then laid down a nice bunt for a single.  Robert Amaro brought home Peterson with a single to right field.  After a sacrifice bunt by Jimmy Kerrigan, Daniel Dragos knocked in both base runners with a single to right center.

This is first the defeat of a ranked team this season.  Temple's last win against a top 25 team occurred last year on Feb. 23 at Virginia Tech 7-3.

Vanderslice pitched five innings, allowing only four hits and two runs while striking out two batters.

Zach Batchelor relieved Vanderslice in the sixth inning and gave up only three hits in three and two-thirds innings.  Patrick Krall came in with two outs in the ninth inning with two runners in scoring position and delivered with a fly ball to left field for his first career save.

Temple scored the first run of the game in the second inning.  D'Acunti led off with a single to left field and went to second on a throwing error from a failed pickoff attempt.  Amaro knocked him in with a double down the right field line.

Louisville took the lead with one run each in the third and fourth innings before the Owls answered back in the fourth.

The Owls out-hit the Cardinals 12-7 in the game.  D'Acunti, Peterson and Amaro combined for eight hits in 12 at-bats.  Peterson had two doubles to tie Temple's doubles season record of 23 set by Steve Nikorak in 2011.

Ryan Kuehn will start for Temple as they look to win the series against Louisville tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
