No. 16 Houston Outlasts Temple 7-5 on Senior Day; Game Two Canceled

5.17.14 | Baseball

CAMDEN, N.J. – No. 16 Houston outlasted Temple baseball 7-5 on Senior Day at Campbell's Park on Saturday afternoon.  Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled due to inclement weather on Friday, causing unplayable conditions for Game 2 of the series, as well as travel arrangements for Houston on Saturday.

Temple drops to 14-30, 9-14 while Houston improves to 41-14, 14-9.

Both teams traded runs early in the game.  Temple scored two runs in the first and one in the second.  Andrew Nist knocked in Derek Peterson with a home run to left field for his first home run of the season.  Peterson got on base with a single.  Bobby Heitzman drew a walk with the bases loaded in the second to bring in a run.

The Owls grabbed a one run lead in the fourth off a Bobby Heitzman single.  Daniel Dragos and Frank D'Agostino led off the inning with singles.
The Cougars took the lead for good in the fifth inning with two runs off Patrick Vanderslice.  They added another run in the sixth and eighth.

Five relief pitchers who's regular season career ended after today pitched in the game:  Daniel Wasson, Zach White, Phil Gianakos, Preston Hill and Zach Batchelor.  Senior Ryan Kuehn started the game, and pitched three and one-thirds inning with one earned run, two walks and two strikeouts.

Temple cut the lead to two in the eighth.  Nist scored on a fielding error at second base on a grounder by Robert Amaro.  Nist singled through the left side to start the inning.

Temple will be the No. 6 seed for the conference tournament that starts next Wednesday.  The Owls will be in a pool with the two seed UCF, three seed Houston, and seven seed Memphis.  Temple will face these three teams in four days starting on Wednesday through Saturday with one day off.  Games will be played at 11 am, 3 pm, and 7 pm at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla.  The winner of this pool and the other pool will face off against each other on Sunday at noon in the conference championship and automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.  When the schedule is announced, a release will be up on the website.
