Baseball Falls to No.16 Houston 3-0 in the First Game of Pool Play of the American Athletic Conference Tournament

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Temple baseball dropped its first game in pool play of the American Athletic Conference Tournament to No. 16 Houston 3-0 at Bright House Field. The Owls drop to 14-31 while the Cougars improve to 42-14.
The Owls fell down early in the game. Houston used two errors in the first two innings to get two runs. A fielding error by Derek Peterson in the first allowed the Cougars to score on an RBI single. Michael D'Acunti overthrew Peterson on a stolen base attempt at second that allowed Houston to score on another RBI single.
Another error by Peterson in the fifth inning allowed a baserunner to score on the play to push Houston's lead to three.
Temple had the bases load with zero outs in the seventh inning after a double by Robert Amaro, single by Jimmy Kerrigan, and walk by Daniel Dragos. They weren't able to capitalize as Frank D'Agostino struck out and David Hall grounded into a double play at third base to end the inning.
Starter Matt Hockenberry pitched all eight innings for the Owls. Hockenberry gave up eight hits, two walks, and zero earned runs while striking out six batters. Andrew Lantrip got the win for Houston, his sixth save of the season, and Tyler Ford earned his fourth save of the season.
Game two of pool play for Temple is tomorrow against UCF at 7:00 p.m. Patrick Vanderslice will start for the Owls, and Eric Skoglund will be the starting pitcher for the Knights.
