CLEARWATER, Fla. – Temple baseball dropped their second game in the American Athletic Conference Tournament to No. 2 seed UCF 6-2. The loss drops Temple to 0-2 in pool play while UCF improves to 2-0.
The Knights scored their first run in the third inning. A sacrifice fly to right field with one out gave the Knights a lead they wouldn't relinquish. They used another sacrifice fly with one out to left field in the fourth inning to score their second inning.
UCF doubled their lead in the fifth inning. With two outs and no one on base, the Knights used three straight hits to score two more runs off starter Patrick Vanderslice. Vanderslice lasted five innings with seven hits, no walks and three strikeouts.
Patrick Krall pitched the next two innings for Temple. Krall allowed one run on a RBI single to right field. He had two strikeouts, two walks, and two hits given up.
Temple got on the board in the seventh inning when Jimmy Kerrigan tripled to left center with one out. Daniel Dragos knocked in Kerrigan on a grounder to second base.
Tim McCarthy and Zach White finished the game for the Owls. McCarthy pitched the eighth inning, allowing one run on two hits, one walk and one strikeout. White pitched a scoreless ninth with one hit and one strikeout.
The Owls knocked in another run in the final inning of the game when Dragos knocked in Andrew Nist with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Kerrigan led the Owls at the plate with two hits in three at-bats and one walk.
Temple will conclude pool play against UConn Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. with Ryan Kuehn starting for the Owls.
