Baseball Falls to Rutgers 4-3 After Rally Falls Short

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Temple baseball fell to Rutgers 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Bainton Field in game two of the weekend series. Temple drops to 12-26, 7-10 while Rutgers improves to 22-22, 8-8.
Temple found itself down 4-0 for the second day in a row but was unable to tie it up like they did yesterday. The Owls had Frank D'Agostino on third with one out in the ninth inning, but two groundouts by Andrew Nist and Reyn Sugai ended the game.
Rutgers scored one run in the first inning and three in the fourth off starter Patrick Vanderslice. Vanderslice pitched four and one-third innings with five hits and five walks given up while striking out two batters.
The Owls' rally started in the sixth inning with one run. Bobby Heitzman had a ground-rule double down the left field line with two outs. Derek Peterson then had another ground-rule double to left center to knock in Heitzman.
Two runs were scored in the eighth inning by Temple. The inning started with two singles by Sugai and Heitzman. Robert Amaro then drew a walk to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed Sugai to score, and then Heitzman reached home on a throwing error by the catcher.
Preston Hill allowed only one hit in three and two-thirds scoreless innings of relief. Hill also had two strikeouts with no walks.
Heitzman had two of five hits for Temple.
The final game of the series is scheduled to start tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. with Ryan Kuehn as the starting pitcher for Temple.
