Rutgers Finishes Sweep of Temple With 9-6 Win

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers finished its sweep of Temple baseball on Sunday afternoon at Bainton Field with a 9-6 win. Temple drops to 12-27, 7-11 while Rutgers improves to 23-22, 9-8.
The Scarlet Knights scored the game-winning run in the fifth and added two more in the seventh to put the game out of reach for the Owls.
Temple jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Reyn Sugai led off the game with a triple to left field and scored on a grounder to first base by Bobby Heitzman. Three straight singles by Michael D'Acunti, Robert Amaro and Jimmy Kerrigan added another run. A wild pitch then allowed Amaro to reach home for the third run of the inning.
Rutgers evened the score with three runs of their own in the second. The Scarlet Knights used three RBI singles against starter Ryan Kuehn, who lasted only three innings.
The Owls got back the lead in the fourth inning with two runs. Frank D'Agostino tripled to left center to knock in Amaro after Amaro singled and stole second to start the inning. D'Agostino scored on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Dragos to right field.
Rutgers took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth with three runs off Simon Mathews.
The lead was cut down to three in the eighth on a solo homerun by Amaro. Amaro had three hits in as many at-bats with one walk to lead Temple at the plate.
Temple returns home for the rest of the season with weekend series against Houston and Louisville. The Louisville series is scheduled to start next Friday at 3:00 p.m. at Skip Wilson Field.
