Baseball Loses to Louisville 2-0 in Pitcher's Duel

AMBLER, Pa. – Temple baseball fell to No. 5 Louisville 2-0 at Skip Wilson Field on Friday evening in game one of the conference weekend series. Temple drops to 12-28, 7-12 while Louisville improves to 39-11, 15-4.
Both starting pitchers excelled in the game as Louisville starter Kyle Funkhouser (10-2) bested Temple starter Matt Hockenberry (4-5). Funkhouser pitched eight shutout innings, allowing only four hits and one walk with 12 strikeouts. Hockenberry pitched all nine innings, giving up seven hits, two runs and three walks with 10 strikeouts.
The Cardinals used a sacrifice fly to left field in the fifth inning for the game-winning run and a RBI single through the left side of the infield in the seventh inning for an insurance run.
The Owls only mustered four hits in the game. The best chance to score came in the fifth inning after Robert Amaro and Jimmy Kerrigan singled after one out. Amaro advanced to third on a wild pitch, but Kerrigan was then picked off, and Daniel Dragos grounded out to the shortstop to end the inning.
Amaro had half of Temple's hits in the game, going 2-4 with a stolen base.
Temple will take on Louisville tomorrow at Campbell's Field for game two of the series at 11:00 a.m. Patrick Vanderslice is scheduled to start for the Owls.
