Volleyball Rebounds to Top Tulsa on the Road
10.11.15 | Women's Volleyball
PHILADELPHIA — The Temple volleyball team posted a 3-1 victory on the road at Tulsa, moving to 5-1 in American Athletic Conference play. The Owls won the match 25-18, 23-25, 25-16, 25-12, improving to 14-4 overall. Tulsa falls to 8-10 overall, 3-3 in The American.
"This was a really good win for us, whenever you go on the road, it's tough to win," said head coach Bakeer Ganesharatnam. "The team responded really well and it was a good team effort after a tough loss at SMU. To split this weekend, against two really strong teams, is a successful trip for us."
The Owls rebounded from Friday night's loss in a big way, recording a season-high 16 total blocks. Junior Kirsten Overton and sophomore Janine Simmons led the strong net play, each finishing with season-highs of eight total blocks.
"We did a very good job with the block today," noted Ganesharatnam. "Sandra and Kirsten did a good with the timing and setup, and Janine also did a tremendous job in the middle."
Offensively, sophomore Irem Asci notched a double-double with a team-high 13 kills to go along with 10 digs. Sophomore Izzy Rapacz had 12 kills, hitting .455, while also posting six blocks. Overton finished the day with eight kills, hitting .438, while sophomore Tyler Davis had 10 kills. Junior Caroline Grattan notched five kills, to round out the offensive numbers.
Senior Sandra Sydlik played a great all-around game, recording 49 assists, while also adding nine digs and four blocks. Senior Alyssa Drachslin paced a tough Temple defense with a match-high 21 digs, while sophomore Dara Peric added 14 digs, and senior Kayla Yingling contributed 10. Overall, the Owls out-dug Tulsa, 71-49.
Temple broke open a tight set one with kills from Davis and Asci, igniting a 5-0 run that made it 11-6 Owls. After some back and forth play, a 3-0 Tulsa run cut the Owls' advantage to 12-11. Temple surged forward, including a 5-1 run, punctuated by a block from Overton and Sydlik to make it 17-13. Temple extended its lead to 22-15 on a Tulsa attack error, and then closed out the match with kills from Asci and Rapacz to make it 25-18 Temple.
A furious comeback from Temple fell just short in set two, as Tulsa tied the match with a 25-23 win. With the Owls up 10-9, Tulsa used a 9-0 run to take a commanding 18-10 lead in the set. A pair of Rapacz kills interrupted the run for Tulsa, but the Hurricane quickly responded, going up 24-13 on an ace. Temple staved off set-point after set-point, using three blocks, and four kills to go on a 10-0 run to make it a 24-23 set. An Owl attack error on the next point squashed the TU comeback, however, allowing Tulsa to tie the match at 1-1.
"We actually played really well in that set with the exception of one rotation," noted Ganesharatnam. "Tulsa did a good job capitalizing on that rotation, and didn't let us sideout for a while there."
In a tight set three, Temple took over momentum midway through play. Leading 11-10, the Owls went on a 6-0 run, which included three blocks, giving Temple a 17-11 lead. Tulsa cut the advantage to 17-14 with two blocks of their own, before the Owls surged ahead with kills from Rapacz and Asci to make it 20-15. Temple then closed out the set on a 5-1 run, as kills from Asci and Overton, and a pair of Tulsa attack errors made it 25-16 to put the Owls up 2-1 in the match.
Temple's offense rolled early in set three, as the Owls jumped out to a 5-0 lead backed by three kills from Davis, forcing Tulsa to burn its first timeout. An Ashley Hooper kill broke up the Temple scoring frenzy, but the Owls surged ahead once more, opening a 12-4 lead backed by three Asci kills. The Hurricane would get no closer, as the Temple completed the 3-1 match victory by rolling to a 25-12 win in the set.
The Owls have a short week, returning home to Philadelphia before hitting the road on Tuesday for a Wednesday match-up at UConn. Temple will face the Huskies at 5:00 p.m.
