Volleyball Faces Cincinnati and Memphis on the Road

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple volleyball team plays on the road this weekend, at conference-foes Cincinnati and Memphis. The Owls take on Cincinnati on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and will play at Memphis on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. local time, 2:00 p.m. EST.
LAST TIME OUT: TEMPLE
Temple bounced from a 3-2 loss to Houston on Friday by picking up a 3-1 victory over Tulane (26-24, 25-16, 23-25 and 25-21) on Sunday.
Temple's outside hitters were the driving force offensively against the Green Wave, with junior Caroline Grattan leading the team with 22 kills, hitting .356. Fellow junior Tyler Davis notched 13 kills, while senior Sandra Sydlik led the Owls with 51 assists. Defensively, the team combined for 16 blocks led by sophomore Janine Simmons who tallied five blocks. Senior Alyssa Drachslin rounded out the box score with a team-best 16 digs.
AMERICAN HONOR ROLL
Caroline Grattan earned a spot on the American Weekly honor roll on Monday, marking the ninth award for Temple this year. Grattan earned her first award of the season and becomes the sixth Temple player honored by The American in 2015.
Grattan provided an offensive spark for the Owls, recording 4.14 kills per set and hitting .375. The junior played the final three sets in Temple's narrow loss to Houston, nearly helping the Owls complete the come-back. She notched seven kills and hit .455 to carry Temple down the stretch. On Sunday, she earned her first start of the season and made it count, recording a season-high 22 kills, while hitting .356.
CONFERENCE LEADERS
Temple hits a conference-best .272, while also ranking first with 14.16 kills per set. The Owls are also second in The American in assists per set (13.03).
Individually, Overton leads The American in hitting percentage (.429) and is sixth in blocks per set (0.99). Asci is fifth in the conference in kills per set (3.76), while Sydlik is second in assists per set (10.88). Alyssa Drachslin ranked fifth in the conference in digs, averaging 4.85 per set.
OWL LEADERS
Sophomore Irem Asci leads the Owls with 3.76 kills per set, while junior Tyler Davis (2.89) and sophomore Izzy Rapacz (2.49) also bolster the Temple attack. Junior Kirsten Overton leads the team in hitting percentage, attacking at a .429 clip, while also averaging 2.41 kills per set. Senior Sandra Sydlik has dished out 10.88 assists per set.
Defensively, senior Alyssa Drachslin has racked up 383 total digs, averaging 4.85 per set. Overton leads the Owl blockers, with 78 total, while sophomore Janine Simmons has 76 and Rapacz has 67.
NATIONALLY-RANKED
Temple appears in the top-25 in two national stat categories this week. Temple is 22nd in Division I in both hitting percentage (.272) and 25th in kills per set (14.16). Additionally, the Owls rank 38th with 13.03 assists per set.
Individually, Overton ranks 10th in the nation in hitting percentage (.429), while Sydlik ranks 39th nationally in assists per set (10.88).
SCOUTING CINCINNATI
Cincinnati is 14-7 overall with a 6-4 mark in The American. The Bearcats most recently topped Tulsa on the road, 3-2.
Reigning American Offensive Player of the Week, Jordan Thompson, leads Cincinnati with 3.73 kills per set, hitting .301. Carly Nolan (2.94 k/s) and Emma Roberson (2.69 k/s) also aid the attack. Jade Tingelhoff (7.42 a/s) and Parker Shepherd (4.13 a/s) split setting duties.
Abby Williams leads the Bearcat's defense, tallying 343 digs at an average of 4.34 per set. At the net, Maya Muldrow had racked up 61 total blocks, while Cortnee Bowser has 47.
SCOUTING MEMPHIS
Memphis is 14-9 overall, 5-5 in The American. The Tigers are coming off a 3-0 loss on the road at conference-leader, SMU.
OH Catlin Lilly leads the Tigers' offense with 2.90 kills and 28 total aces. McKenzie Hayes (2.60 k/s) and Oluchi Agomuo (2.41 k/s) and also bolster the Memphis attack. Veronica Zimmerman runs the Tigers' offense, putting up 9.01 assists per set.
Lindsey Purvis heads the Tigers' defense with 276 total digs (3.25/set). Summer Morgan leads the Tigers with 85 total blocks, including 15 solo blocks.
OWLS AGAINST THE FIELD
Temple is 7-2 all-time against Cincinnati, having won four in a row. The Owls won both matches against the Bearcats last season, and also grabbed the first meeting in 2015. Temple is 5-1 all-time against Memphis, winning their earlier season meeting. The teams split the season series in 2014, with both teams winning on the road.
