Men's Cross Country Takes Fourth at American Championships; Highest-Ever Finish for the Program
10.31.15 | Men's Cross Country
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Led by an eighth-place finish from senior Matt Kacyon for the second year in a row, Temple men's cross country earned its highest-ever finish at the American Athletic Conference Championships. The Owls placed fourth of nine teams, jumping two spots from a year ago.
Kacyon earned All-Conference honors for his efforts with his eighth-place finish in a personal-best 24:07.56, as did senior Alex Izewski in 12th place with a personal-best time of 24:17.79.
"Today was a huge step in the right direction for our guys," said coach James Snyder. "This was our highest-ever finish at a conference championship, and having two guys get all-conference is also a first. I told our kids we needed to send all our seniors out right, send them out with something special, and everyone really rose to the occasion today and took care of business.
"We finished nine points out of third and 14 out of getting a runner-up trophy. To put ourselves in that position and end up in the upper end of a pack of teams competing for those spots, it was just a great day for our guys. More than anything I was so proud of how we competed over the last 3K. It was drastically different, and all of our guys probably caught 8-10 other guys over the last two miles. That tells me we're in a great spot heading into regionals. I'm just incredibly proud of the way all these guys competed today."
Junior Stephan Listabarth was the Owls' third finisher, taking 20th in a personal-best 24:43.67. Senior Will Maltin was also in the Top 30, finishing 27th in a personal-best 24:56.35. Rounding out the top five for Temple was freshman Johnathan Condly in a personal-best 25:39.18.
Tulsa took the team title with four runners in the top five, with UConn in second place. Houston took third with 101 points, edging out Temple in fourth with 110.
The Owls will now take the next two weeks to prepare for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional, set for Friday, Nov. 13 at Princeton.
