Fencing Wins Two of Three Events at the 36th Annual Temple Open

PHILADELPHIA - It was a hugely successful start to the season for Temple fencing, as the Owls captured six top-three finishes among the three weapons at the 36th annual Temple Open, including wins in both foil and sabre. Senior Fatima Largaespada took the win in foil, while freshman Blessing Olaode won her first collegiate meet for sabre.

The Owls had four top-10 finishes in foil, including Largaespada's first-place showing and Miranda Litzinger's second-place performance. Sophomore Becca Stanford took fifth place, while senior Demi Antipas tied for sixth. Rounding out the foilists for Temple were freshman Auset Muhammad in 17th and junior Kristen Kemnitzer in 21st.

Litzinger and Antipas got off to the strongest starts for foil, going undefeated through the two pool rounds. Largaespada dropped just a single match in the first round before going undefeated in the second, while both Kemnitzer and Muhammad also lost just a single bout in the opening two rounds.

Three Owls placed in the top 10 in epee, led by sophomore Safa Ibrahim in second place and junior Alexandra Keft in third. Freshman Quinn Duwelius took eighth in her first Temple meet, while freshman Fiona Fong placed 18th and senior Jessica Hall was 25th.

Ibrahim and Keft were both unbeaten in the pool rounds, while Fong and Hall dropped just one bout each.

Olaode earned a 15-10 win in the finals in sabre against teammate and senior Gloria Aguilar who took second place. Olaode was undefeated in the opening pool rounds, as was senior Petra Khan who finished in sixth place. Aguilar dropped just one bout in the opening rounds, while freshman Jessica Rockford also dropped just a single bout in the two pool rounds and finished 11th overall. Junior Victoria Suber placed 22nd for the Owls in sabre, while senior Olivia Wynn was close behind in 26th.

Next up for Temple is the Penn State Open next Saturday, Nov. 7.
