#13/14 Florida State Uses Hot Third Quarter to Top Women's Basketball

12.6.15 | Women's Basketball

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- A huge second half for Florida State led the #13/14 Seminoles to a 75-47 victory over visiting Temple on Sunday afternoon. FSU improves to 7-1 with the win, while Temple falls to 3-4.

The Owls led after one and trailed by just four after two, before a 22-4 third quarter put Florida State in control. Temple was led by 14 points from sophomore Tanaya Atkinson, while classmate Donnaizha Fountain hit a career-high in points for the second-straight game, adding 13. Senior Erica Covile finished the game with seven points and a team-best nine rebounds, while sophomore Khadijah Berger had six points.

The Seminoles held the Owls two leading scorers, junior Feyonda Fitzgerald and sophomore Alliya Butts to just five total points, all coming from Fitzgerald. Butts was held scoreless for just the third time in her career, with two of the three games coming against Florida State.

Florida State had the early edge, going up 7-2 on a three-point play from Ivey Slaughter. Temple responded with Fountain scoring eight-straight points on an 8-2 run, giving the Owls their first lead, 10-9 with 4:45 to play in the frame. Temple followed with another three, this time from Covile, before FSU hit back-to-back jumpers to tie the game at 13-13. The Seminoles regained the lead by hitting a three with 12 seconds on the clock, but Fitzgerald answered with a deep three of her own, beating the buzzer to put the Owls on top, 20-18, after one.

Temple extended its lead to 28-20, opening the second quarter on an 8-2 run. FSU answered with a run of their own, a 10-2 surge, tying the game at 30-30 with 54 seconds left in the stanza. From there, Florida State scored back-to-back buckets in the last minute, taking a slim 34-30 lead into the locker room.

Fountain and Atkinson had 10 points each at the break, while Covile had seven points and five rebounds. Temple out-shot the Seminoles 41.6% to 40.6%, but FSU held a 23-12 advantage on the glass.

The third quarter was all Florida State, as the Seminoles out-scored the Owls, 20-2. Temple was held to just 2-of-17, for 11.8% from the field, while FSU connected on 6-of-14 shots. The quarter turned a four-point deficit for the Owls into a 20-point deficit, as Florida State led 54-34 at the end of three.

The Florida State offense run continued into the fourth quarter, as the Seminoles used an 8-2 run to go up, 62-36. Temple got threes from Berger and Fountain to cut the lead to 24 (68-44) but the Owls would get no closes, as Florida State finished out the 75-47 victory.
