Epee Undefeated as Fencing Goes 3-1 at Sacred Heart Invitational

12.6.15 | Women's Fencing

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Temple fencing finished 3-1 at its second dual meets of the season on Sunday as the epee squad went undefeated at the Sacred Heart Invitational.

The Owls won 18-9 against NYU, 18-9 vs. host Sacred Heart and 21-6 against Vassar. Temple's lone defeat came at the hands of nationally ranked Harvard, 17-10.

"For epee to go undefeated including a 6-3 win against Harvard is a big deal," said Temple head coach Nikki Franke. "All in all, this was a good end to our first semester of competition but also showed us things we need to continue to work on. We've definitely seen improvement from the beginning of the semester to now, but we need to use the break well and come back ready to go in January."

Senior Fatima Largaespada finished with the top record for the foil squad, going 7-1, while freshman Jessica Rockford was a leader in sabre with a record of 5-1. Sophomore Safa Ibrahim finished 7-2 for epee, while freshman Quinn Duwelius was undefeated at 5-0 for the epee squad.

Along with a 6-3 win against Harvard, epee also recorded wins of 7-2 against NYU, 6-3 against Sacred Heart and 8-1 against Vassar. Junior Alexandra Keft was a perfect 3-0 against Harvard, and also went undefeated with a 3-0 record against NYU. Duwelius posted a 2-0 record vs. NYU, as did Ibrahim, who also went 3-0 against Sacred Heart. Epee got a strong performance out of squad leader and senior Jessica Hall, who was 2-0 against Harvard and 3-0 against Vassar. Freshman Fiona Fong was also undefeated in the final match against Vassar, going 2-0.

Largaespada finished 2-0 against NYU and 3-0 against Vassar. Senior and team captain Demi Antipas was also 2-0 vs. NYU, while junior Miranda Litzinger had a 3-0 record against Vassar.

For the sabre squad, junior Victoria Suber went 2-0 against NYU, while Rockford posted a 3-0 record against Vassar.

Temple will take the rest of the month off from competition, returning as a full team on Saturday, Jan. 16 at the Penn State Invitational. Prior to that, the Owls will host their annual Alumnae Meet at McGonigle Hall on Sunday, Jan. 3.
