Pepe Sanchez to be Inducted Into Big 5 Hall of Fame
2.2.15 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - Former Temple University All-American Pepe Sanchez will be among four new members inducted into the Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Fame on Monday, April 13 at the Palestra.  The induction ceremony is part of the season-ending Big 5 Basketball banquet.Â
Sanchez, who starred at Temple from 1996-2000, will be enshrined along with Stan Hochman (Media), Ugonna Onyekwe (Penn) and Bill Raftery (Special Category).
Arguably one of the greatest point guards in the history of Philadelphia Big 5 Basketball, sanchez is one of only six Temple players to earn Associated Press All-America honors (3rd team in 1999-2000). He is also one of only two Owls to be named the Philadelphia Big 5 MVP twice. Sanchez earned the honor for both his junior (1998-99) and senior seasons (1999-00) and joins the legendary Guy Rodgers, who was named Big 5 MVP three times. Â
Not a prolific scorer, Sanchez distinguished himself as one of the game's best passers, dishing 689 assists and his 5.9 career assist average is still a school record. Â He also owns the Big 5 record, and still ranks fourth nationally, with 365 career steals. Â As a senior he was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Year despite averaging a mere 5.6 points per game. Â He is the only player to receive the honor without scoring over 10 points per game.
A native of Bahia Blanca, Argentina, he was one of the first two Argentinians to play a regular season NBA game when he signed with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2000 as an undrafted free agent. Â He played one season with the 76ers and another with the Detroit Pistons before pursuing a professional career overseas. Â In 2004 he helped Argentina win the gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
