Men’s Basketball Shines Light on Autism Saturday

PHILADELPHIA - On February 6-8, the NCAA celebrates the 2nd Annual Autism Awareness Weekend in college hoops. Temple head coach Fran Dunphy and his staff will join many other programs by wearing blue puzzle piece lapel pins at their game against Memphis Saturday (1:00 pm ET/ESPNews/1210 AM WPHT).

This is all part of the Coaches Powering Forward for Autism campaign.  Now in its second year, the organization has been inspired by NCAA coaches Pat Skerry of Towson and Tom Herrion of Georgia Tech, whose sons were both diagnosed with autism.

Temple leads all Division I schools in member engagement and ranks third in money raised by the organization for Autism Awareness.

"Everyone knows someone who has been touched by autism," said Temple assistant to the head coach Dave Duke, who has spearheaded the Owls' efforts. "So this has been an easy way for our program to help raise awareness for a great cause."

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are a group of complex disorders of brain development that impact a person's ability to communicate and socialize.  The world's leading autism science and advocacy organization, Autism Speaks, was started in 2005 and has been dedicated to funding global biomedical research into the causes, prevention and treatment.
