4.27.15 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - Temple will join Florida, North Carolina and Navy in headlining the 2015 Veterans Classic on CBS Sports Network, an annual showcase at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. that brings together top teams from across the country in celebration of Veterans Day. Â The event tips-off on Friday, Nov. 13, opening day of the 2015 college basketball season, with the Owls taking on North Carolina at 7:00 PM, ET, followed by Florida vs. Navy at 9:30 PM, ET.
"Roy (Williams) and I have talked about what a tremendous opportunity this event is for our programs," said Temple head coach Fran Dunphy. "To take part in this prestigious college basketball doubleheader that honors the brave men and women who put their lives on the line for this great nation is an honor and a privilege. We are excited to be a part of the Veterans Classic, and to bring our Temple team to the Naval Academy for a game against a great program in North Carolina."
Â
In addition to the games, the three participating schools will have the rare opportunity to get a glimpse of what life is like as a midshipman at the Naval Academy. Â The visiting teams will be immersed in the culture and tradition of the Naval Academy, including touring the 'Yard,' watching noon meal formation, eating lunch with the Brigade at King Hall, as well as a number of other unique experiences, including military demonstrations and receptions. CBS Sports Network will provide a look at the schools' visit to the Naval Academy on HOOPS CONFIDENTIAL: VETERANS CLASSIC, a 30-minute all-access show.
Â
The 2015 event is the second annual Veterans Classic. Last year's inaugural Veterans Classic featured Michigan State, Tennessee, VCU and Navy.Â
The game against the Tar Heels will also serve as the season opener for the Owls, who are coming off a 26-11 season that included a trip to the NIT semifinals. Â It also is the first meeting between the Owls and the Tar Heels since the 1991 Elite Eight game between the two schools. Â Fourth-ranked UNC defeated unranked Temple, 75-72, on March 24 at the Meadowlands in the closest of the Cherry and White's five Elite Eight games under Hall of Fame coach John Chaney.
