PHILADELPHIA – North Carolina, projected by many as the preseason #1 team in the country, and Wisconsin, coming off consecutive Final Four appearances, highlight a strong 2015-16 Temple University men's basketball non-conference schedule released today.
"Opening the season against a perennial national power in North Carolina and adding a high-caliber program like Wisconsin to an already strong schedule presents a great opportunity for our program," said Temple head coach Fran Dunphy. "We also travel to the Puerto Rico Tip-Off which is filled with quality teams. When you add our Philadelphia Big 5 games we have a schedule that will present the right challenges to prepare our team for conference play."
Temple will open the season against UNC, which returns four starters from its 2015 Sweet 16 season, on November 13 at the Veterans Classic held at the Naval Academy. The game will be part of a doubleheader televised live by CBS Sports Network to kick off the college basketball season. Temple-UNC will be the first game, starting at 7 p.m., while Navy will host Florida in the nightcap.
The Owls will then take part in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off for the third time in the last nine years. The three-game, four-day tournament, which takes place Nov. 19, 20 & 22, features a strong field that includes Butler, Miami, Minnesota, Mississippi State, Missouri State, Texas Tech and Utah.
Following the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, the Cherry and White host Delaware in their home opener on Sunday, November 29. It is part of a two-game homestand with FDU making its first-ever appearance at the Liacouras Center on December 2.
Next up is a date at 2015 NCAA finalist Wisconsin on Saturday, December 5. The game is part of a new home-and-home series as the Badgers play at the Liacouras Center during the 2017-18 season.
Temple opens Philadelphia Big 5 play with a game at Penn on December 9 and then hosts Saint Joseph's (December 13) four days later. A home game against Delaware State (Dec. 19) closes out the 2015 portion of the schedule.
The Owls will help celebrate the 60th Anniversary of city-series play by playing La Salle at The Palestra on January 20 as part of a Big 5 doubleheader. A home game against Villanova on February 17 rounds out non-conference play.
The American Athletic Conference dates are expected to be announced in August.
