Alyssa Delp Named Unanimously to 2015 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team

8.20.15 | Field Hockey

NEW YORK - Temple senior Alyssa Delp is a unanimous selection to the 2015 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, as announced by the league office on Thursday. The Owls have been picked to finish third in the conference, while two-time defending NCAA champion UConn has been picked to repeat as conference champion.

UConn senior midfielder Roisin Upton was selected BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year while her teammate Charlotte Veitner was tabbed for the BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

The Huskies collected all five eligible first-place votes from the leagues' head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own players or teams. Old Dominion collected 20 points to claim second place in the coaches' poll while Temple came in third with 17 points and garnered the remaining first-place vote. The Owls were followed by Providence with 14, Villanova with eight and Georgetown with six.

Connecticut won its second straight NCAA title in 2014, fourth overall, finishing 20-3 and 5-0 in conference play. The Huskies saw four named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team and return two of their top three scorers from last season in 2014 Rookie of the Year Veitner and Anna Middendorf. Veitner (19 goals and 12 assists) and Middendorf (nine goals and nine assists) are the conference's top returning points-scoring duo, combining for 77 in 2014.

2014 Defensive Player of the Year Upton led the BIG EAST in assists a season ago with 13 and along with Olivia Bolles anchors the UConn defense that ranked fourth nationally in goals against average (1.04) and fifth in scoring margin (2.07).

Old Dominion went 11-8 and 4-1 in league games last season, finishing second in the conference. The Monarchs placed three on the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, including leading scorer Sarah Breen. Breen posted 10 goals in 2014, including four game winners, and is joined on the preseason all-conference team by teammates Emily Harting and Megan Byas.  Harting and Byas control the ODU defense that tallied six shutouts and finished the year second in the BG EAST with a GAA of 1.53 per game.

Marybeth Freeman takes the reigns in her first year as head coach at Temple, bringing championship experience along with her. Freeman has captured five NCAA titles, two as a player at Old Dominion and three as an assistant coach with Maryland. The Owls return eight of 11 starters from last year's team that advanced to the final game of the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship, going 14-7 and 3-2 in conference tilts. Unanimous Preseason All-BIG EAST selection Delp will look to lead the Temple offense and will be assisted by junior Katie Foran and fellow senior Tricia Light.

Providence's (11-9, 2-3 BIG EAST) Megan Hamilton and Deidra Clymer picked up Preseason All-BIG EAST honors. Hamilton led the Friars in scoring with 36 points on 15 goals and six assists in 2014. Clymer, a graduate student, ranked fourth in the league in saves with 75 while in goal and recorded a career high 11 wins.

Villanova (4-14, 1-4 BIG EAST) and Georgetown (6-12, 0-5 BIG EAST) will look to improve upon last season's finishes with the help of an experienced group of players. The Hoyas return their top four goal scorers and the Wildcats bring back unanimous Preseason All-BIG EAST team member Kayla Kenney.

The field hockey season gets underway on Aug. 28 as all six teams open their 2015 campaign that Friday.

Conference play begins on Oct. 2 as Old Dominion hosts Temple in a contest that will be broadcast live from Norfolk, Va. on the BIG EAST Digital Network. Georgetown travels to Providence that same day while Connecticut and Villanova will lift the lid on conference play on Oct. 3 in Storrs, Conn.

The BIG EAST Championship is slated for Nov. 6 and 8 at Old Dominion's LR Hill Sports Complex with the top four seeds qualifying. The semifinals and finals will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
