Men's Soccer Opens 2015 Season Tomorrow at Manhattan

8.27.15 | Men's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – Temple men's soccer opens the 2015 season this Friday, August 28, with a match at Manhattan College at 4:00 p.m.

The Owls are coming off a successful preseason run with a 3-0 exhibition win against Lafayette and an exhibition tie against Drexel. Throughout these two matches, the Owls recorded six goals from four different players, three of whom are newcomers to the Owls.

As the regular season begins, the Owls and head coach David MacWilliams look to build upon the successful preseason run. "We're up for the challenge and we're looking forward to it," said MacWilliams regarding opening the season on the road. "I think we're going to have a good weekend".

Already proving their depth and ability, the 15 new Owls have been ranked 47th in the College Soccer News 2015 Top Recruiting Classes. This is the third year in a row the men's soccer staff has brought in a recruiting class ranked in the top 50. This year's newcomers represent six different states and four countries including Canada, Spain and Germany.

Key returners Jared Martinelli and Matt Mahoney will provide strong experience and leadership, with both players coming off a successful season in 2014. Mahoney has been named team captain for the 2015 campaign after ranking second in minutes played with 1,637. Martinelli ranked second on the team in total points, logging two goals and four assists in his 17 starts. He was also named second team all-conference for the second year in a row.

Also offering valuable experience and depth to the team will be sophomores Brendon Creed and Mark Grasela, senior Patrick Lestingi, and redshirt sophomore Alex Cagle. Both Lestingi and Cagle, along with freshmen goalkeepers Robin Goetz and Marko Urosevic, will look to fill the notable loss of Dan Scheck, who graduated ranking third all-time in goals against average. His 198 career saves also placed him in the record books, ranking ninth among all Temple goalkeepers.

"We want to get up there and have a good game on Friday," said MacWilliams. "I think we're all excited about beginning our season".
