Women’s Soccer Travels to Orlando to Open Conference Play

9.23.15 | Women's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – After ending their non-conference schedule with two victories over city rivals, the Temple women's soccer team will travel to Florida to begin American Athletic Conference play against UCF on Thursday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at UCF Track and Soccer Complex.

The Owls ended last weekend with a perfect 2-0 record. On September 18, the Owls registered their fifth shutout of the season as they took down city rival La Salle, 3-0. On Sunday, Temple defeated Saint Joseph's, 3-1.

Against La Salle, the Owls recorded their first win against their city rival since 2002. Sophomore Gabrielle McKeown scored the game-winning goal in the seventh minute in her first game back from an injury suffered in the Owls' 2-3 loss to Lehigh on September 4. Freshman Sarah McGlinn picked up her third goal of the season in the 69th minute, while senior Erin Lafferty picked up her career-high fifth in the 74th minute.

Freshman Jordan Nash had six saves against the Explorers, which included a best chance scenario for La Salle to score in the left corner of the net. Nash's efforts also helped lead Temple to its fifth shutout of the season, which ties for fourth in Temple history; the record is 8 set back in 1991.

Against St. Joe's, senior Kelly Farrell, who leads the nation in goals scored, notched her first career hat trick to give the Owls their first back-to-back victories against the Hawks. Farrell knocked in goals in the seventh, 59th and 69th minutes to give her a total of 11 on the season. Surpassing her goal total from 2014 by two, Farrell ranks third in Temple history for most goals scored in a single season; the record is 13 set back in 1994 and 1995.

Nash continued a spectacular weekend by adding a career-high eight saves to her resume against St. Joe's and allowing only one goal to be scored. Overall, Nash recorded a 0.945 save percentage on the weekend.

Farrell now leads the NCAA?in goals scored and total points (24), while also ranking second in goals per game (1.22) and points per game (2.67). She also leads the American Athletic Conference in all of those categories. She picked up American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors and Nash was tabbed as Goalkeeper of the Week.

Freshman Vera Varis has been the star keeper for the Knights, recording 26 saves so far this season and recording a shutout in her first start against FIU in August.

In their last game out, the Knights defeated Georgetown, 3-1. Sophomore Hannah DeBose notched her first career goal in the 26th minute on a header off a free kick. This week, Fredriksson was named American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the?Week for the second time this season, while DeBose was named to the Weekly Honor Roll.
