Field Hockey's Comeback Attempt Falls Short at American, 4-3
9.27.15 | Field Hockey
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The final two goals of the game were scored by Temple field hockey, but the Owls ultimately came up one goal short in a 4-3 loss at American (7-3) on Sunday afternoon.
It was the third straight loss for the Owls (3-7), and the second loss in a row by a single goal. They trailed the Eagles 4-1 with 25 minutes remaining, but cut the margin to one with back-to-back goals including one scored with just over two minutes remaining.
The Owls were caught off guard early by American, as the Eagles got on the scoreboard less than two minutes in and took a 2-0 lead in the first nine minutes. Jess Davis scored for American at the 1:30 mark, and Rafaela Rubas added to the lead in the ninth minute.
The two American goals were scored with the Eagles' first two shots on goal, while meanwhile the Owls had three shots on goal and were unable to convert.
The teams went back-and-forth down the stretch of the half, and Temple was able to keep American scoreless the rest of the way despite five penalty corner chances for the Eagles.
The Owls were awarded a corner in the final minute, and with no time left on the clock they made it count with a goal by senior Tricia Light on an assist from senior Alyssa Delp.
American opened the second half much like the first, scoring just over four minutes in and adding a second goal five minutes later. Natalie Marsh scored the first to make it 3-1, and assisted on the second goal by Katie Lonsky.
Temple had plenty of chances offensively, with three more penalty corner opportunities that came up empty. Delp took three shots in that stretch, and was fouled after the third of those, leading to a penalty stroke opportunity. Delp made the stroke, her third of the season and second in two games.
With six minutes left, senior Sarah Deck had a shot hit the post on a corner chance. A few minutes later, with just over two minutes remaining, the Owls got back on offense quickly after an American corner, and redshirt sophomore Sarah Deck scored to bring Temple within one.
The Owls pulled goalkeeper Haley Mitchell with a minute and a half remaining, but were not able to come up with a shot.
Temple's next game is its first BIG EAST Conference contest, taking the Owls to #15 Old Dominion for a 3 p.m. tilt on Friday, Oct. 2.
