Listabarth Takes First at Duquesne Duals for Men's Cross Country

9.5.15 | Men's Cross Country

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Junior transfer Stephan Listabarth got the men's cross country season off to a strong start with a first-place finish at the Duquesne Duals on Saturday morning. The Vienna, Austria, native, bested the field in the 8K race with a time of 26:09 and helped Temple finish second among the eight teams.

"This is the first time I've had our guys open the season with the traditional 8K distance," said Coach James Snyder. "We have a big group of younger guys and I didn't want to sugarcoat what collegiate racing is about. It's a lot longer of a distance than they're used to, and I wanted to come right out and see where we stand. It was exciting."

Seniors Alex Izewski and Matt Kacyon finished in fifth and ninth place, respectively, in times of 26:22 and 26:38.2. The Owls' next two finishers were both freshmen, with Ben Evans taking 25th (27:15.5) and Johnathan Condly placing 31st (27:27.8).

"Some of our young guys raced like veterans," said Snyder. "They all did a really good job getting in groups and working together. Matt, Alex and Stephan got out front and everyone else queued off them. They did a great job executing the race plan. Stephan broke away with about 800 meters left for the win, and this wasn't something we expected. He came in and has been training really well, and taking home an invitational win in a meet like this is really special."

Among eight teams, the Owls finished second only to host Duquesne. Temple, ranked 13th in the Mid-Atlantic Region in the USTFCCCA Preseason rankings, finished ahead of Pittsburgh who was 12th in the regional rankings.

"It's just the beginning of the season and there's a lot of racing to be done, but this is obviously a good spot to be in heading into our home meet next Friday," said Snyder.

Temple will host the annual Big 5 Invitational on Sept. 11 at Belmont Plateau. The men's start time is set for 5:30 p.m.
