Volleyball Tops Notre Dame to Win Fourth in a Row

9.5.15 | Women's Volleyball

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. — The Temple volleyball team won their fourth-straight with a 3-1 (25-22, 18-25, 25-15, 25-13) victory over Notre Dame in the Owls' second match of the 2015 Seton Hall Invitational. The win improves Temple to 4-1 on the season, while Notre Dame falls to 1-4.

"This is a great win for us," noted head coach Bakeer Ganesharatnam. "Notre Dame is a young and talented team." Temple hit .284 as a team, but discounting the tough second set, the team's hitting prowess rose to .320 for the match.

Leading the way for the Owls, sophomore Irem Asci recorded the first double-double of her Temple career. She knocked down a match-high 19 kills, adding 15 digs, with a pair of blocks. Juniors Tyler Davis and Kirsten Overton each notched double-digits in kills, while hitting .400. Davis had 16 kills, while Overton added 10 kills, six digs, and four blocks. Senior Alyssa Drachlin posted a match-best 23 digs, while sophomore Dara Peric had 10 digs and seven kills. Senior Sandra Sydlik ran the offense, distributing 41 assists and adding six digs.

Temple turned a 10-10 tie in set one, into a 19-15 lead with strong play from Overton and four-straight attack errors from Penn State. The Owls kept a slim lead that dipped to just two points at 24-22, but Temple's Asci hammered the final kill of the set for the 25-22 win.

Notre Dame jumped out to an early 10-5 lead in set two, and never looked back. Temple hit just .038, making seven errors on just 26 attempts, while Notre Dame hit .212 in the set. The Irish cruised down the stretch, tying the match at 1-1 with a 25-18 set win.

Temple rebounded in a big way in the final two sets. The Owls combined to hit .401 in sets two and three to earn the hard-fought win. Ganesharatnam credits the turnaround to being able to score off the block better, and also reducing the unforced errors.

In set three, Temple jumped out to a 13-4 lead and easily wrapped up the 25-15 victory. Set four was more lopsided, as the Owls, opened up an eight-point lead on a long Drachslin serving run, eventually going up 24-9. Notre Dame crept back a little with three-straight Owl attack errors, but Temple closed it out with a Davis kill to win 25-13, and 3-1 in the match.

The Owls close out the Seton Hall Invitational tonight at 7:30 p.m. against the hosts.
