Wilson Picks Up Second 60 Meter Hurdles Title at Gotham Cup

1.22.16 | Women's Track and Field

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Picking up her second gold medal in the 60 meter hurdles, freshman Sylvia Wilson inches closer to breaking the school record in the event (8.53) with a personal-best at Saturday's Gotham Cup. Wilson ran an 8.59 to take first in a field of 45 total runners.

"We are making some headway," said head coach Elvis Forde. "I am going to keep encouraging everyone to keep raising the bar each weekend for themselves."

The Owls' success extended far beyond Wilson's gold with junior Kenya Gaston earning two top-10 finishes in the 200 meter and 400 meter races. Out of 89 total participants, Gaston posted a time of personal-best 56.05 in the 400 meter race to take fifth overall. In the 200 meter race, Gaston ran a personal-best 24.93 to place sixth.

Fellow junior Simone Chapman also earned herself a personal-best at the meet. She matched her top mark in the triple jump of 11.51 meters to take ninth overall and added to the Owls' 10 total top-10 finishes for the day. Classmate Bionca St. Fleur posted an impressive 24.76 in the race to earn fourth overall.

Those 10 performances also included Jimmia McCluskey and Crystal Jones, who hit solid marks in the long jump to place seventh and ninth, respectively. Jones' performance in the long jump was the first for her in many years and will return to the high jump next weekend.

Simone Brownlee joined Wilson in the top five of the 60 meter hurdles, running a time of 8.90 seconds to place fifth. Brownlee's finish, along with Wilson's, marks the fourth consecutive meet where the Owls have placed an individual in the top eight of this event.

Freshman Aliya Sharp was the final individual performance to earn a top-10 finish, running a 57.23 in the 400 meter race to place ninth in the large and competitive event.

The distance medley relay, comprised of freshmen Alexis O'Shea, Sharp, Brigit Andersson, and Katie Leiser, earned the fifth place spot in the challenging event with a time of 12:38.23.

O'Shea was also able to post the highest mid-distance finish for the Owls, running a 2:18.50 in the 800 meter race to take 16th overall. The event had a total of 72 runners, with Andersson and Maya Halprin-Adams also running the event to take 37th and 23rd respectively.

"We still have a few weekends to go in the indoor season," said coach Forde. "We have a small group going up to Penn State next weekend. We want to see how our best will match up against some of the best from around the country."

With the Gotham Cup complete, the Owls end a three-meet series at the Ocean Breeze Complex and travel to State College, Pa. next weekend to participate in the two-day Penn State Invitational. The competitions begin on Friday, Jan. 29.
