Dunphy's 200th Temple Win Comes on Last Second Shot at #23/24 UConn

1.5.16 | Men's Basketball

HARTFORD, Conn. - Josh Brown hit the game-winning jumper at #23/24 UConn with two seconds remaining to give Temple a 55-53 win, its second over a ranked team this season and the 200th victory of head coach Fran Dunphy's career with the Owls.

Dunphy is now one of just five Division I coaches to record 200 or more wins at two different schools while taking both to at least six NCAA Tournaments. He recorded his 500th career win in last season's American Athletic Conference Tournament.

For the Owls, it marks the first time since 1998 that they've defeated two ranked teams on the road. Just seven days ago, Temple won 77-70 at #22/23 Cincinnati. For Brown, it was his second career game-winner after also hitting the winning shot with two seconds left at Memphis last season.

Hitting 3-of-3 from long range, including two from extremely long range, Quenton DeCosey led Temple (7-6, 2-1) with 15 points. Devin Coleman came off the bench for 14 points, while Brown and Jaylen Bond finished with 11 apiece. Bond notched his fourth double-double of the season, grabbing a game-best 10 rebounds.

The game saw six ties and 12 lead changes, with neither team leading by more than two points for the final eight and a half minutes. UConn's Daniel Hamilton hit a pair of free throws with 29 seconds left to tie the game for the final time, and after a Temple timeout at 14 seconds, Brown came through with jumper and a desperation shot by the Huskies missed the mark.

Both teams hit just 10-of-31 (32.3 percent) from the field in the first half, but it was the Owls with a 30-27 lead at the break. The opening period featured eight lead changes, and Temple had to rebound from some early struggles.

Brown hit a three-pointer on Temple's first possession for a 3-0 lead, but the Owls later trailed 11-3 after the first five minutes. Brown ended the drought with an old-fashioned three-point play that started a 12-2 run, giving Temple a 15-13 lead.

UConn picked up the pace to build as much as a six-point, 25-19 lead down the stretch, but Temple closed the half on an 11-2 while allowing only a pair of free throws for the Huskies in the final five minutes.

Three-pointers for Bond and Coleman early in the second half extended the Owls' lead to seven, and the pair later hit back-to-back two-pointers to give Temple its largest lead of eight, 40-32 at at 13:15.

With a 7-2 run, the Huskies narrowed the gap to three, and near the eight-minute mark they tied the game and took a one-point, 47-46 lead on a pair of free throws. The lead changed hands three times from that point, but both teams suffered a late drought, not scoring a single point from 2:44 until Hamilton's free throws with 29 seconds left.

Temple returns home for its next contest, a 9 p.m. game against East Carolina on Saturday, Jan. 9 (ESPNews/1210 AM WPHT).
