10.13.16 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA -Â Temple field hockey freshman Maddie Merton has been named the Student-Athlete of the Week by Philafieldhockey.com and presented by Longstreth, for the week of Oct. 3-9.
The New Zealand native has been a key player for the Owls, including last week's 1-1 record on the heels of a five-game winning streak. Merton, who starts at midfield, has notched four goals and one assist to date. She is the key corner inserter for the team. Prior to Temple, Merton's athletic accomplishments in her home country were many including playing on an Auckland Development Regional Team that finished as runner-up in New Zealand.
Merton is at business major at Temple in the Fox School of Business. She is in excellent academic standing having earned all A's midway through the first term. Merton is also concerned with helping others and has been involved with the Ronald McDonald House and working with terminally ill children in a hospital setting multiple times a year.
"Maddie has done a great job in her transition to Temple both in the classroom and on field," said head coach Marybeth Freeman. "She sets goals for herself; she evaluates herself honestly and refocuses on how she can continue to thrive on the field and off. She is a diligent student both in the scholarly sense and of the game, and this program is lucky to have her impact it in such a positive way."
