Temple Celebrates 20th Anniversary Season at the Liacouras Center
10.27.16 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - The Liacouras Center, home of Temple Basketball since 1997, will celebrate its 20th season during the Owls' 2016-17 schedule.Â
The arena, originally named the Apollo of Temple, opened on December 9, 1997 when the Temple men's basketball team, under the direction of Hall of Fame coach John Chaney, stunned #18 Fresno State, coached by Jerry Tarkanian, 76-61. That win was the first of 14 victories over nationally-ranked programs in the venue.
Rededicated on February 13, 2000, and named in honor of former Temple President, the late Peter J. Liacouras, The Liacouras Center has hosted the 2004 NCAA Women's Basketball First and Second Rounds, the 2005 NCAA Women's Basketball East Regional, and seven NIT games in its history.
Temple men's basketball has posted a 197-62 (.761) record on the 19 previous seasons, and sported a record 25-game win streak from Jan. 6, 2010 thru Dec. 28, 2011. The Temple women's team has compiled a 132-63 (.677) record in the arena.
In honor of this 20th Anniversary season, Temple will be posting the Top 20 games (in no rank order) on social media in the building starting today with the Fresno State game. Each week an additional game will be added through this historic season.
