Marc Steinsberger Earns Top-10 Finish at American Cross Country Championship
10.29.16 | Men's Cross Country
Westchester Township, Ohio - On Saturday, graduate student Marc Steinsberger led Temple men's cross country with a ninth-place finish (24:48.4) at the American Cross Country Championship. Steinsberger edged Isaac Dobos and Dallas Elmore from Tulsa to earn a top-10 spot with a time of 24:48.4, a performance worthy of all-conference honors.
"I was extrememly proud of the way our team raced today," said head coach James Snyder. "They competed very well for being a relatively young team. Surprisingly, our score was the exact same as last year and we came in just seven points behind UConn, who has always been a tough match for us. Marc put up a good fight to stay in the leading pack of the race; his earning of all-conference honors is a great accomplishment."
Sophomore Johnathan Condly and freshman Kevin Lapsansky were the squad's second and third-best finishers. At the 3.3 mile mark, Condly held 27th place while Lapsansky followed behind in 31st. The duo pushed through to finish within the same second (23:37.5, 25:37.6) earning 21st and 22nd place respectively.Freshman Zach Seiger was also a top-30 finisher for the Owls coming in at no. 27.
"John went from a high 40s finsher last year to finishin 21st overall this year," Snyder boasted. "He ran his heart out today. He and Kevin did a great job at sticking together during this race and it really made a difference."Â
Temple finished fifth out of nine American Conference teams, besting Memphis, East Carolina, Houston and USF. Yet, not quite topping last year's fourth place finish. Tulsa won the team title with five top-10 finishers, with Tulane in second place and Cincinnati in third.
"To earn fifth place after losing our top-four runners last year is phenomenal," said Snyder. "As we grow and get more depth in our squad, those holes in our pack that we may leave open in a race will become less apparent. We hope to keep up this momentum."
Temple men's cross country will take the next two weeks to prepare for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals scheduled for Nov. 11.
