– All regular season games have been played and the field is now set. No. 3 UConn, Liberty, Providence and Temple will play in this week's BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship, presented by Jeep, at Howarth Field at the Temple Sports Complex in Philadelphia, Pa.
The third-ranked Huskies claimed the top seed in the tournament by going undefeated (7-0) in conference play. UConn stands at an impressive 18-1 overall and will look to win its fourth consecutive conference postseason championship. In this year alone, the Huskies outshot their opponents 370 to 177 and outscored them 91 to 22.
Meeting UConn in the semifinals of the championship will be fourth-seeded and host, Temple. Despite falling to Liberty in the Owls' final conference game of the season, Temple made the field by winning a three-way tie between themselves, Old Dominion and Quinnipiac. The Owls beat both the Monarchs and the Bobcats, securing the final seed of the tournament.
Liberty scored the second seed thanks to a 7-0 victory over Temple on Friday and a come-from-behind win over Providence the weekend before. Four different athletes scored for Liberty against the Owls, led by midfielder Agueda Moroni with three goals. Tied with Providence at 5-2, Liberty took the second seed by way of its head-to-head win against Providence.
The Friars punched their ticket to the 2016 BIG EAST Championship with a dramatic, 1-0 victory over Old Dominion in overtime on Friday. Providence's Mary O'Reilly tallied the game-winning goal 9:44 into overtime, as she deflected a feed from senior Adrienne Houle on a penalty corner. It marked O'Reilly's first career goal, while Houle picked up her third assist of the season.
The 2016 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship, presented by Jeep, will be held at Howarth Field, with the semifinals on Nov. 4 (1 p.m. and 4 p.m.) and the title game on Nov. 6. All three games will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network. UConn and Temple will play in Friday's 1 p.m. semifinal, followed by Liberty vs. Providence at 4 p.m.
