Temple Athletics Announces Formation of Basketball Ring of Honor

PHILADELPHIA – Temple University Director of Athletics Dr. Patrick Kraft announced today the formation of a Basketball Ring of Honor to honor the greatest players in the long and storied history of the men's and women's basketball programs.
During five home games this season, Temple will honor former players with special presentations during halftimes. The first honorees will be recognized on Sunday, November 20th, at halftime of the men's Owls' home game against Manhattan, when All-Americans Meyer "Mike" Bloom ('38), Pepe Sanchez ('00), Don Shields ('38) and Terence Stansbury ('84), will be recognized for their incredible contributions .
"The Ring of Honor is an ideal way to honor our basketball tradition and the great players who have worn the Cherry and White," said Kraft. "This season is just the start of what we feel will be a special honor for our legendary men's and women's players whose names will forever be displayed in the Liacouras Center."
On December 17th, Bruce Drysdale ('62), Bill "Pickles" Kennedy ('60) and Jay Norman ('58) will be honored at halftime of the men's basketball game against NJIT (2 pm). Two greats from the 1960s, John Baum ('69) and Jim Williams ('66), will take their place in the Ring of Honor at halftime of the men's basketball game against ECU on January 7th (noon).
Beloved former assistant coach Jim Maloney will be joined by two longtime support staffers, John DiSangro, the Director of Basketball Operations during the John Chaney Era and forty-year basketball secretary Essie Davis, during the Ring of Honor Ceremony on Saturday, January 14th at the men's basketball game against Tulsa (4 pm).
Women's basketball greats Aggie Stegmuller ('45) and Lynn Blaszczyk Petruzzelli ('83) will be added to the Ring of Honor during the women's game against defending NCAA Champion UConn on February 1st (7 pm).
The Ring of Honor recipients were selected by a special committee comprised of administrators, staff, former players and alumni close to the basketball program. Criteria for selection included distinction in one or more of the following categories:
1) All-American
2) All-District
3) All-Conference
4) All-Big 5
5) Temple Athletics Hall of Fame
6) Temple/National Statistical Leader
7) Professional career
