Late Heroics Lift Men's Basketball to 63-58 Win Over UConn
2.11.16 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - With an incredible comeback over the final five minutes, Temple men's basketball completed a regular season sweep of UConn with a 63-58 win at home on Thursday night. In front of a "White Out" crowd of 8,316, the Owls (15-8, 9-3) extended their season-best win streak to four games and are now tied with SMU for the top spot in the American Athletic Conference.
Senior Quenton DeCosey put up his typical big numbers, leading all scorers with 23 points, but it was the heroics of junior Daniel Dingle that sparked Temple in its comeback effort. He finished with a career-high 15 points, scoring 12 of those on four second-half three-pointers. He scored three of those in a two-minute span during a 14-2 run for the Owls that tied the game after they had trailed by as many as 12.
DeCosey scored the final nine points of the game for Temple and went 5-of-5 at the free throw line in the final minute to seal the victory.
The Owls hit nine treys in the game to UConn's five, and got three of those from senior Devin Coleman who was Temple's third double-figure scorer with 11. Senior Jaylen Bond pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds including six on the offensive glass, helping Temple finish with a 17-7 lead in second-chance points.
Temple snapped a three-game win streak for UConn (17-7, 7-4). The Huskies got a team-best 15 points from Shonn Miller, and 12 from Rodney Purvis off the bench.
The first half was tight with three ties and five lead changes. The Huskies used a 9-0 run near the midway point to lead 16-10, which was the largest lead for either team in the opening period.
Coleman broke a five-minute scoring drought for Temple with a three-pointer at 7:41, and DeCosey followed with another trey to tie the game at 16-16.
UConn led by four on three more occasions down the stretch of the first half, and then by five points, 27-22 with just 1:49 remaining. Coleman sparked 9-2 closing run for the Owls with another shot from long range, and DeCosey finished it off with a jumper at the buzzer for a 31-29 lead at the break.
DeCosey hit 5-of-8 from the field including a pair of treys to lead all players at halftime with 14 points.
Dingle hit his first three-pointer early in the second half for a 34-33 lead, but it would be the last bucket for the Owls in over five and a half minutes. UConn took advantage with a 10-0 run for a nine-point, 43-34 lead near the 14-minute mark.
Temple's second drought of the game was broken by Bond with back-to-back layups to get the Owls within five, but a 9-2 run for the Huskies gave them their largest lead of 12, 52-40 with 7:48 remaining. UConn matched that lead just past the six-minute mark, and still led by 11 with 5:13 to go.
Dingle hit a three-pointer at 5:38 that was followed by another UConn bucket, but he wasn't finished. He went on to hit two more treys in a span of less than a minute, and Coleman added another. With 1:49 remaining, DeCosey followed an offensive rebound with a bucket to complete a 14-2 run and tie the game at 56-56.
UConn's only points of the final five minutes were two free throws, scored with 1:24 remaining for a two-point lead. DeCosey then converted a three-point play at the other end for a 59-58 advantage, and junior Josh Brown came up with a big steal to give Temple the ball with 23 seconds left.
The Huskies never took a shot after that point, turning the ball over twice. DeCosey was perfect at the line for the game (7-of-7) and hit four of those in the final 20 seconds to keep UConn at bay.
Temple plays its second game of a three-game homestand on Sunday, Feb. 14 against USF at 3 p.m. (CBS Sports Network/1210 AM WPHT).
