Track & Field Collects 14 Personal Records at David Hemery Valentine Invitational

2.13.16 | Women's Track and Field

BOSTON, Mass. –   Collecting 14 total personal records and two new school records at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, Temple women's track and field concluded its final regular indoor season meet with great success.
Earning the highest individual placement for the Owls was freshman Sylvia Wilson who bested her own personal and school record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.47 to take first.

"The team fed off each other from the first event on Friday afternoon," said head coach Elvis Forde. "Having personal records across the board shows how hard the team is working. The team knows that the conference championshpis are coming up and their level of running needs to be the best it can be."

Senior Jimmia McCluskey landed a top three finish with a personal-best mark of 5.86 meters in the long jump to take third overall. Junior Bionca St. Fleur posted a 5.62 meter jump to place seventh. St. Fleur was then able to log a new personal record in the 200 meter race with a time of 24.23 seconds to take 10th. St. Fleur's time also marks a new school record in the event, which St. Fleur had set last year with a time of 24.30.

Junior Kenya Gaston and Sharp also ran in the 200-meter race and added two more personal records to the day. Gaston logged a time of 24.63 seconds that ranked 19th out of a total pool of 237 runners. Sharp was able to post a time of 25.13 seconds that ranked 34th overall.

Owls who competed in the longer distance runs saw large improvements all around. Both freshmen Brigit Andersson and Halprin-Adams bested their personal times in the 800-meter race. Halprin-Adams ran a 2:14.45 to place 42nd in a field of 192 total runners. Andersson made a great improvement with a time of 2:17.37 to better her previous record by more than three seconds.

All four Owls who ran the mile posted personal-best times. Leading the event was Pinson who logged a time of 5:07.49. Just behind Pinson was freshman Alexis O'Shea with a 5:10.47, followed by freshmen Katie Leisher and Ashton Dunkley who ran times of 5:12.24 and 5:17.01, respectively.

Freshman Maddie Bixler earned a personal best in the 3000-meter race with a 10:40.38.

The final individual to log a new personal record for the day was junior Megan Schneider, the only Owl to run the challenging 5000-meter race. Schneider improved her previous record in the event by nearly 20 seconds with a time of 18:54.91.

Two relay teams ran for the Owls, with the group of Sharp, St.Fleur, Kenya Gaston, and Halprin-Adams besting their previous time in the 4x400-meter relay. The team completed the relay in a time of 3:47.54 to take second behind Duke.

The group of Graduate student Blanca Fernandez, freshman Aliya Sharp, freshman Maya Halprin-Adams, and sophomore Katie Pinson ran the distance medely relay in a time of 11:46.25.  The relay placed sixth overall.

"I feel like the program is making headway every weekend," said coach Forde. "The talent pool we have brought in has increased and the athletes that are here are rasing their own bars so we can make things happen at our competitions. My hope is to get the team to understand that every step they take to improve themselves helps push this program to the next level."

Up next for the Owls will be the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships. The meet will begin on Sunday, Feb. 28 in Birmingham, Ala.
