Late Comeback for Men's Basketball Leads to 83-79 Overtime Win Over Tulsa
2.4.16 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - Devin Coleman's three-pointer from the wing with two seconds left in regulation gave Temple a chance in overtime against visiting Tulsa, and the Owls made the most of it, beating the Golden Hurricane 83-79. Temple (13-8, 7-3) came back from 12 points down in the second half to record its first-ever win against Tulsa (14-8, 6-4).
Temple forced overtime after not leading at any moment of the second half, and trailing by five with 25 seconds left. Jaylen Bond started the final charge with a tip-in, and his rebound at the other end gave the Owls the final possession where Quenton DeCosey fought off a double team to find an open Coleman.
Down a point after a back-and-forth first few minutes of overtime, Temple got treys from Daniel Dingle and Obi Enechionyia in a 7-2 run that gave the Owls a four-point, 81-77 lead with 32 seconds left. Tulsa got a jumper and was then forced to foul DeCosey, who hit both free throws for a four-point lead with 12 seconds left. The Hurricanes' James Woodard took their final shot, but it missed the mark and Temple was able to run out the clock.
The win is head coach Fran Dunphy's 516th career victory, tying him with Hall of Famer John Chaney for the most wins in Philadelphia Big 5 history.
After going scoreless in the first half, DeCosey finished with a team-high 21 points. Bond notched his sixth double-double of the season with 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while Enechionyia finished with 17 points. Coleman added 10, and Josh Brown dished six assists to go with nine points and three steals.
Tulsa's Pat Birt hit 5-of-12 three-pointers and scored a game-high 22 points, while Shaquille Harrison added 11 rebounds to 20 points for the Hurricane. Woodard also finished with a double-double of 18 points and 10 boards.
With five ties and six lead changes in the first half, neither team was able to get separation. Tulsa's largest lead was two, while the Owls fared only slightly better with a five-point lead near the five-minute mark.
The final tie of the first half, 27-27, came on a Woodard layup for Tulsa with 1:55 to go. The Owls missed their final three shots while Tulsa missed a pair and the tie score stood at the break.
Tulsa opened the second half on a 15-3 run, taking a 42-30 lead after seven minutes. The Hurricane matched that 12-point lead twice more before a 7-0 run for the Owls got them within five, 49-44 at 8:32.
It was largely a three-point battle down the stretch, with each team making six shots from long range in the second half.
With a short 5-0 run capped by a DeCosey trey at 2:21, the game was tied for the first time in the second half at 61-61. From there, a 7-2 Tulsa run made it a five-point game with 35 seconds left. After a DeCosey layup, the Hurricane hit a pair of free throws at 25 seconds to again lead by five.
Bond got a tip-in with 16 seconds left, and got a defensive rebound at the other end that led to the Owls having the final possession of regulation with 10 seconds left. DeCosey passed to the far wing to an open Coleman with two seconds to go, and Coleman drained the trey to make it 70-70 and force overtime.
Temple has a quick turnaround before its next game, a noon contest at UCF on Saturday, Feb. 6 (ESPNU / 1210 AM WPHT).
