Tenth-Ranked Fencing Will Face Five Strong Teams at Duke on Sunday
2.5.16 | Women's Fencing
PHILADELPHIA - Another challenging meet is on tap for the 10th-ranked Temple fencing team as the Owls head to the Duke Meet on Sunday, Feb. 7. Among the five teams Temple will face are two ranked in the top 10, both #2 Notre Dame and #9 Penn State. Host Duke is the top team receiving votes outside of the top 10 in the CollegeFencing360 Coaches Poll.
Temple will start the day with an 8 a.m. dual against UNC before facing #2 Notre Dame at 9:30. The Owls will take on Brandeis at 11 a.m. and have a lunch break before fencing Duke at 1:30 p.m. Temple will conclude the meet by facing #9 Penn State at 3 p.m. The meet will have a subscription-based live video webstream, available HERE.
"We're looking forward to another strong meet," said Temple head coach Nikki Franke. "All of these teams will be challening to face, and we have to be on our game in order to be successful. We have no easy meets this year, and the lineup of teams at Duke is even stronger than usual this season. Duke always hosts a very good meet and we're excited to go."
Temple is 18-8 so far this season with just two dual meets left, the Duke Meet and the Owls' own Temple Invitational on Feb. 20. Most recently, Temple went 8-4 at the Northwestern Duals on Jan. 30-31. Senior Jessica Hall and junior Alexandra Keft recorded the most wins for the Owls, each going 15-12 overall for the epee squad. Competing only on day two after an injury, sophomore Safa Ibrahim went 8-3.
For the foil squad, juinor Miranda Litzinger was a leader at last weekend's meet, going 12-5, while junior Kristen Kemnitzer was nearly perfect at 11-1. Freshman Auset Muhammad finished with an impressive record of 11-2.
The sabre squad got a strong performance from senior Petra Khan at 13-8, while senior Olivia Wynn went 12-2. Freshmen Blessing Olaode and Jessica Rockford put up records of 11-4 and 12-6, respectively.
After the Duke Meet, Temple will return to action as a full team on Feb. 20 at home. Some Owls will take part in the Junior Olympics, set for Feb. 12-15 in Cleveland, Ohio.
