Tenth-Ranked Fencing Goes 3-2 at Sunday's Duke Meet

DURHAM, N.C. - The 10th-ranked Temple fencing team went 3-2 at the Duke Meet on Sunday, defeating host Duke, UNC and Brandeis while falling short against #2 Notre Dame and #9 Penn State.
"Every match was tough today," said head coach Nikki Franke. "There were no easy matches, but we were just inconsistent. We'd have someone fence well one match, and someone else do well in another match. We couldn't get everybody fencing well at the same time."
Franke noted the epee squad was the most consistent of the three, and it was that squad with the biggest win in any match, defeating UNC 8-1. Sophomore epeeist Safa Ibrahim won the most bouts, going 9-6 overall, while freshman Quinn Duwelius went 4-0 for the meet.
The foil squad leader, senior Fatima Largaespada, had a big match against #2 Notre Dame with a perfect record of 3-0.
For sabre, senior Petra Khan went 3-0 against Duke, while senior Gloria Aguilar went 2-1 against Notre Dame.
Some members of the team will compete in next weekend's Junior Olympics in Cleveland, while the full team will return to action at its own Temple Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 20.
