Men's Basketball Hosts Cincinnati to Open Conference Play; Full 2016-17 Schedule Announced
9.8.16 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA – Temple men's basketball announced its complete 2016-17 schedule, with 30 of 31 games already slated for television and the last, at Villanova, expected to be televised as well. The Owls, regular season American Athletic Conference champs a year ago, will play 21 games on the networks of ESPN and another seven on CBS Sports Network.
Temple opens the American Athletic Conference season at home for the first time in the four-year history of the league, playing Cincinnati at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 28.
Each conference school will play eight others twice, and two opponents just once. The Owls' one-game opponents are Tulsa (at home Jan. 14) and Houston (on the road Jan. 28).
"Every game we play in The American is a challenge," said Temple head coach Fran Dunphy. "This league is truly one of the top basketball conferences in the nation, and we have to be at our best every time we step on the floor."
Temple's conference schedule is highlighted by an ESPN2 game at home against SMU on Thursday, Feb. 9 (9 p.m.) and an ESPN game at home against defending tournament champion UConn on Sunday, Feb. 19 (4 p.m.).
The Owls' 13-game non-conference slate is highlighted by a trip to the Barclays Center for the NIT Season Tip-Off at Thanksgiving.
Philadelphia Big 5 rival La Salle will serve as the team's opener as the Explorers come to the Liacouras Center for a November 11 contest. It is one of seven home non-conference games in the Liacouras Center that is celebrating its 20th season as the Owls' home.
Temple returns eight letterwinners and three starters from last year's team that posted a 21-12 record in winning the American Athletic Conference regular season title and advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
